SA Youth wins Board of the Year

Each year, United Way selects and honors one nonprofit agency board as the Board of Year at its Night of a Thousand Stars Volunteer of the Year Awards Banquet.

This year, the hard-working Board of Directors of SA Youth was nominated to receive the award and won.

The SA Youth Board has been engaged in many ways over the years to bring SA Youth from a tiny basement in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church wrestling with space and funding issues to a full-service nonprofit agency that aims to serve 1,600 youth annually from across San Antonio at ten locations.

Joe Maratea, Volunteer John Speegle, Matt Reedy, Cynthia Le Monds, Ralph Grimmer, Dawn Volesky, and Jake Palmer.

SA Youth is a 26-year old community organization that keeps San Antonio’s low-income children in school and helps young adults who have quit school gain a second chance through high-school credit recovery and workforce training. We support youth in highly distressed neighborhoods achieve life success through hard work, determination, and opportunities to excel.

Our mission is to develop the character, strengths, talents and skills of San Antonio’s high-risk urban youth through fun, safe experiences, positive learning environments, and holistic programs that inspire each individual to fulfill their potential personally and in the community.

Many thanks to all of you for your tireless commitment to our youth. It is because of your efforts that we have programs available that keep kids out of trouble and engaged in learning. Thank you for caring about kids!

Also present at the ceremony to accept the award but not included in the photo were Laura Flores, Louis Cardenas, Kelley Farwell, and Dean Rush.

The United Way event was held on Friday, June 25, 2010 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
