The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio, SA Youth, and San Antonio Youth Literacy have joined forces with the Najim Family Foundation to launch Super Summer Readers, a pilot program that focuses on the importance of summer reading.

Conceived and funded by Harvey E. Najim, the purpose of the Super Summer Readers program is to determine whether a relationship with a caring supportive adult who assists children in summer reading will help maintain and/or enhance the child's current reading level.

The pilot program will include 500 rising 3rd, rising 4th, and rising 5th grade students and aims at preventing the lower academic achievements that are seen at the start of a new school year then they were at the beginning of summer break.

The Super Summer Readers program is from June 4th - August 10th.

Reading Sidekicks will assist pairs of students as they read books appropriate to the students' reading level. Sidekicks will read with students: helping them figure out unknown words, asking questions to check the students' understanding of the book, and encouraging their efforts to read fluently.

At the end of the reading session, Sidekicks will be contacted by our Development Coordinator with steps for completing the background check application. Please make sure you complete your background application as soon as possible. Volunteers that have not cleared their background check, prior to their shift, will be unable to work with students.
